The exhibition presents deposits, gifts from the artists, that have been collected in the gallery throughout over 35 years of its existence, along with premiere works. It refers to the history of the gallery in a specific way, forced by the current situation.
Crack the walls open as others tip their hats… – a fragment of a text by Ryszard Płaza (1959-1998) became the gallery’s motto at the beginning of its existence. It was used for the first time on the occasion of BIAŁA – sztuka bez ścian (Biała – art withot the walls) exhibition in 1994, now the motto is recalled. Today it gains a new, deep meaning: openness to the others, the ability to discreetly and eloquently see what we already know – and what we get to know, or perhaps predict.
The concepts of the exhibition refer to topics related to the body, vanishing, human physical condition, fragility, delicacy, pressure, violence and limitation. Darkness, color, word, meaning and excess are also topics taken up by the creators.
The exhibition Crack the walls open is the result of the mixture of unforeseen circumstances. The most important of them and, at the same time, the one that implies another is the coronavirus epidemic, which completely changed the functioning of the gallery. All exhibitions planned for 2020 have been moved to the next year, because they were largely based on site-specific realizations. The freezing of the economy and sanitary rigors had huge impact on limiting direct interpersonal relations. Social isolation has become a fact.
