Opening: 22.03.2024, opening hour: 18.00
Open until: 30.04.2024, opening hours: Tuesday-Saturday godz. 12.00-18.00
Małgorzata Pawlak and Mikołaj Kowalski are a life-art duo from Lublin. They both graduated in painting from the Faculty of Arts of the Maria Curie-Skłodowska University.
In their creative activities, they undertake various formal experiments. They use many different mediums of artistic expression, yet for each of them, painting is still the basic way of describing and examining reality. Although they create separate works, their common exhibitions are an artistic dialogue in which individual statements take the form of material objects: paintings, sculptures, installations. The topic of conversation is usually what interests artists every day due to their lifestyle and interests: nature, art, amateur scientific experiments.
The titular Small Things are unimportant matters: dust from the studio, small, seemingly uninteresting manifestations of urban nature, things completely unnoticed, which, however, for a careful observer can become a source of inspiration, a pretext for asking questions and gaining knowledge. Minuteness, usually considered a character flaw, may turn out to be useful, especially in a world where, given the multitude of stimuli, we tend to form judgments quickly, but unfortunately often superficially – in a world that is certainly rushing at high speed, not necessarily in the right direction.
The exhibition presents painting cycles created as part of the studies of the Pawlak Kowalski duo at the UMCS Doctoral School of Humanities and Art, as well as other works created in 2019-24.
